Renoir’s Dancer: The Secret Life of Suzanne Valadon

Born into poverty in rural France, Suzanne Valdon began posing for and having affairs with some of the leading artists of the 1880s. However, it was Renoir who caught her indulging in her favourite passion: painting. Her still lifes and frank portraits shocked many, but in 1894 her work was accepted by the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, an extraordinary honour for a working-class woman with no formal art training.
