The Light Railways of Britain & Ireland

First published in 1985, this classic book tells the story of Britain’s last railway development, the Rural light railways, that came about after the 1896 Light Railways Act. The book details the history of the last great railway boom from 1896 to the beginning of the Great War in 1914. During this period many narrow and standard gauge lines were built in Britain and Ireland to serve and open up communities that lacked good transport links.
