Emma Curtis, whose also written under the name Fleur Smithwick, is a Richmond based author married to a set designer with two adult children. She started writing when her children were tiny, motivated by boredom and a desire to achieve something that didn’t require teamwork. Emma made numerous attempts to break into the world of Mills & Boon and considers the time well spent, despite the frequent rejections! After throwing in the towel and admitting defeat, she spent the next few years working as a school secretary. Emma started writing again in 2008, when her eldest child was at university, this time aiming for the mainstream market. Undeterred after two of her books failed to attract an agent, Emma gained some success writing short stories for competitions. One of those winning stories is the basis for How to Make a Friend. Emma now writes full time.
