Pen & Sword Books is a UK publisher of military history, militaria and other specialist areas of interest. Its roots are closely intertwined with those of sister company The Barnsley Chronicle, one of Britain’s oldest provincial newspapers. Among The Chronicle’s earliest published titles was Dark Peak Aircraft Wrecks, which told the story of crash sites in the Dark Peak area of the Peak District National Park. The book was a phenomenal success. An equally appreciative audience emerged with other Chronicle publications including battlefield guides and local history paperbacks. With the production of more books, The Chronicle made the decision to launch an independent book publishing arm. Pen & Sword was born after the company acquired the Leo Cooper military history imprint. Pen & Sword continues to go from strength to strength, with the publication of more than 350 books each year. It has already added new imprints to its core area of military history and publishes the majority of its catalogue digitally in eBook format. In 2017 it launched White Owl, a new lifestyle imprint that publishes books on such areas as health, diet, gardening, wildlife and space.
