The Axeman’s Carnival

Tama is a helpless magpie chick rescued by Marnie, a farmer’s wife. Husband Rob isn’t sure he’s worth keeping, but the fact that Tama can talk opens up new possibilities for the couple’s future. As Tama’s fame grows so too does his earning potential. But the more he sees, the more the animal and human worlds bleed into each other. Eventually, the story moves towards its dramatic conclusion: the annual Axeman’s Carnival. Part trickster, part surrogate child, part witness, Tama is the star of this story. Although what he says to humans is often nonsensical and hilarious, the tale he tells makes disturbingly perfect sense!
