Lori Yerxa (author) based on the Rex Patrick story

Pushing Through

Rex Patrick’s life was hit by trauma from early childhood. A victim of sexual abuse, he was drinking alcohol at the age of 11 and taking drugs by the time he was sixteen. There were other tragedies including the amputation of his leg after a drunk driving accident. Homeless, alone, and addicted, Rex was trapped on the fringes of society. Determined to give sobriety a final shot, he relocated to Colorado where he embarked on a spiritual journey, recovered from his addictions and on the suggestion of a friend, took up cycling. The solitude of the open roads, the pleasure of tackling treacherous mountain bike trails, and racing against two legged cyclists (often beating them) would lead Rex to the greatest prize of all: representing the United States in the Paralympic Games.
