Alford Dalrymple Gardner & Howard Gardner

Finding Home: A Windrush Story

On 24 May 1948, the Empire Windrush sailed from Kingston, Jamaica, to London’s Tilbury Docks carrying 1,027 passengers. Over two thirds of them were West Indian nationals and Alford Dalrymple Gardner was among them. This engaging and wonderfully told story follows the highs and lows of British society experienced by Alford and his fellow migrants as they sought to build a new life for themselves in a foreign country. Alford was no stranger to the UK as he’d joined the British army during the Second World War and returned to Jamaica when the conflict was over. Three years after the war, when Clement Atlee’s government invited Caribbean citizens to Britain to help rebuild the country, Alford didn’t hesitate to answer the call. Alford’s story is a lasting tribute to the gritty resilience of a generation that lived through some of the defining moments of the twentieth century. Alford Dalrymple Gardner died in 2024 at the age of 98.

“An important social history record that will be enjoyed by many generations. Alford and his contemporaries were trailblazers whose contribution to building British society, both culturally and economically, must never be forgotten.”
