Ruth Mansergh has worked as a journalist and freelance sub-editor/proofreader for various publications including Financial Advisor and the Daily Mail. She attended Leeds University where she obtained a degree in English with social history due to her interest in the industrial history of the north of England. Barrow-in-Furness in the Great War, which illustrates her passion for social history, follows the struggles and hardships faced by the people of a town that was vital to the Great War effort. Covering everything from Barrow’s shipbuilding history to the everyday troubles of the townspeople who stayed behind and the courageous local men who went off to fight at the front, this book should appeal to anyone with an interest in how the First World War was fought at home and how those left behind learned to cope.
