STORM NAVIGATION
Former Liberal Democrat politician and ex-Royal Dutch Shell Chief Economist Vince Cable, has written a comprehensive and readable analysis of the UK economy and how it should respond to the complex challenges arising from globalisation and weaknesses in emerging economies. After the Storm is the highly anticipated sequel to his critically acclaimed book The Storm which examined the 2008 global financial crisis and its impact on Britain.
The starting point for his thesis is the 2015 general election, won by David Cameron’s Conservative Party, which lacked a much needed debate about Britain’s economic future and how productivity levels should be increased to improve living standards. Although Cable’s book was published a year before Britain’s controversial referendum on EU membership, the issues which he’s raised have become even more pertinent in the current political landscape. Although 2015 might, in some respects have been a missed opportunity, Cable argues that it’s still not too late to start turning things around and he sets out ten key areas where policy makers need to act, including doubling the innovation budget and addressing the causes of the widening inequality gap.
Economics isn’t everyone’s cup of tea subject but Cable’s down to earth style and intelligent perspective makes “After the Storm” an extremely relevant book.
