Published in August 2021, this is the true, inspiring story of American Paralympic swimming champion McKenzie Coan. Born with osteogenesis imperfecta, or brittle bone disease, McKenzie was all but written off at birth as she wasn’t expected to sit, stand, walk, or even live! Never one to be underestimated, Coan not only defied the odds but silenced the doubters. Her sports career, which started at the age of eight, was kicked off at the organisation BlazeSports, which provides sport and physical activity opportunities for youngsters and adults with physical disabilities. McKenzie went on to compete at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and, four years later, at the Rio Games where she bagged three gold medals. In 2020 at the Tokyo Games, McKenzie took silver in the 100m Freestyle S7, adding to the clutch of gold, silver, and bronze medals won at previous World Championships. So, what’s next for the woman nicknamed Big Mac, Small Fry, and Kenzie? Who knows but watch this space!
