FUNNY, RIDICULOUS, HORRIFIC

I am always looking for unique books to read and Bunny fit’s the bill.

Mona Awad’s novel is about Samantha, whose enrolled on a highly prestigious MFA (Master of Fine Arts) programme, and her relationship with the other girls on the course. They are exclusive, silly, and call each other Bunny. Samantha is both disgusted and fascinated by their behaviour and wants to become one of them. One day she has the chance to do so… and it’s from there that the story really begins to unfold. Strange things start to happen – like, why are there actual bunnies everywhere and where do they disappear off to?

Bunny isn’t just unique but it’s also one of the most hilarious book I have read. It’s supposed to be a horror story with supernatural elements, but more than anything, it’s satire that openly mocks its own premise…though not in an overt way. Once you figure out why the girls call each other Bunny and what they’re really up to – their group has the vibe of cult behavior – you’ll laugh, you’ll gasp, and really enjoy yourself.

I read this mostly in one sitting. The writing is sharp and fast-paced, as well as atmospheric, and honestly, it’s one of the most original novels I have read in recent years (when you have so many different elements – supernatural, horror, mystery, satire, etc. – it’s meant to be a crazy read). It was a genuine pleasure to read, and I wish I could tell you more, but I don’t want to spoil anything for you.

When things became clear, I wasn’t too horrified, I was actually fascinated with the process we find in later chapters. It was so deliciously psychological and disturbing, I was delighted. I always strive to find things dug out of the deepest recesses of the human psyche and to witness the ridiculous behavior that stems from… god knows what… and magic is always an excellent choice when authors want to reveal something deeply disturbing, or true to human nature. As is the case in this book.

If you ever wanted to read this book or if you have it on your shelf, then give it a chance. It’s a fast read that’s also different and strange. If you want a novel that’s unique with unexpected horrors and supernatural hilarity, then this is the book for you.

A five star winner!
