FUNNY, RIDICULOUS, HORRIFIC

I am always looking for more unique reads, and this one definitely fit the bill.

Bunny by Mona Awad is about Samantha, who is in a highly prestigious MFA program, and about her relationship with the other girls in the program. They are exclusive, silly, and all call each other Bunny. Samantha is as disgusted as she is fascinated and wishes to become one of them. Bunny is the most unique and hilarious book I have read. It’s supposed to be a horror with supernatural elements, but more than anything, it’s satire, openly mocking its own premise but not in an overt way. Once you figure out why the girls call each other Bunny and what they’re really up to – their group has the vibe of cult behavior – you’ll laugh, you’ll gasp, you’ll really enjoy yourself.

I read this mostly in one sitting. The writing is sharp and fast-paced, as well as atmospheric, and honestly, it’s one of the most unique reads I have read in recent years (when you have so many different elements – supernatural, horror, mystery, satire, etc. – it’s meant to be a crazy read). It was such a pleasure to read, and I wish I could tell you more, but I don’t want to spoil anything for you.

When things became clear, I wasn’t too horrified, I was actually fascinated with the process we find in later chapters. It was so deliciously psychological and disturbing, I was delighted. I always strive to find things dug out of the deepest recesses of the human psyche and to witness ridiculous behavior that stems from… god knows what… and magic is always an excellent choice when authors want to reveal something deeply disturbing or deeply true to human nature. As is the case in this book.

I really wish I could share more, but please, if you ever wanted to read this book or you have it on your shelf, give it a chance. It’s a fast read and it’s different and strange. If you like unique reads and unexpected horrors and supernatural hilarity, this is the book for you. 5 stars.
