Checkmate to Murder: A Second World War Mystery

A group of people gather at a studio flat in Hampstead London on a dismally foggy night during the wartime blackout. A civil servant and a government scientist pit their wits against each other over a game of chess; at the other end of the room artist Bruce Manaton paints the portrait of his sitter, who’s wearing the colourful robes of a cardinal; while in the kitchen Rosanne Manaton makes tea for the charlady of Mr. Folliner, or “Old Mr. F” as he’s known, the secretive miser who lives in the flat next door. When the body of Old Mr. F is found brutally murdered by his nephew, a Canadian infantryman, Inspector Macdonald of Scotland Yard is called to the scene and takes the young man away for questioning. But something doesn’t sit right with his investigator’s instincts. The circumstances of the death are suspicious, while the alibis of the suspects are more than bit perplexing. Can Macdonald and the CID unravel a mystery more complex than a castling manoeuvre?
