Enlightenment

Thomas and Grace worship together at the local Baptist chapel in the small town of Aldleigh. Though separated in age by three decades, they are kindred spirits torn between their faith and a desire for more. But their friendship is threatened when Thomas falls in love with James Bower, who runs the local museum. The pair become obsessed with the vanished nineteenth-century female astronomer Maria Veduva, whose ghost haunts a nearby manor. Inspired by Maria and the growing realisation that James might not reciprocate his love, Thomas finds solace studying the night-time sky. Meanwhile Grace meets Nathan, a fellow sixth former, who lives a wilder kind of life. Although they are drawn to each other they soon pull apart and Grace is cast out into the wider world and far away from Thomas. In time the mysteries of Aldleigh are revealed, and as Thomas and Grace find each other again they’re brought to a richer understanding of love, the nature of the world, and the miracle of being alive.
