For the Glory: The Life of Eric Liddell

Lauded for his speed and strength, Scottish athlete Eric Liddell was the favourite to win 100 metres gold at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games, although he refused to compete because his Christian faith wouldn’t allow him to run on a Sunday. Instead, he competed in the 400 metres, held on a weekday, and stunned the world by taking gold. Liddell’s story was depicted in the 1981 Oscar winning film Chariots of Fire, yet despite his success he refused to cash in on his fame. He went to China, where he was born, to follow his calling as a missionary and was later interned in a prisoner of war camp when the country fell under the grip of the Japanese army during World War 2. Liddell was admired by his fellow inmates who spoke fondly of his integrity, decency, and kindness in an environment of violence and extreme suffering. Eric Liddell died in February 1945.
