Hidden Figures

Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden were good at maths…in fact they weren’t just good, they were brilliant! They were involved in some of the greatest successes of the NASA, including providing the calculations for America’s first journeys into space. What’s even more remarkable is that they did it at a time when being black AND a woman limited what they could do. Despite this they worked hard, stayed focused on their goals, and used their skills to change the world. This beautifully illustrated picture book explores the story of how these four remarkable African American mathematicians, nicknamed “coloured computers”, overcame gender and racial barriers to build successful careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics).

“This is such an inspiring story that you can read to your children. It’s so important to have all kinds of characters in children’s books that achieve all kinds of things, especially for girls who may dream of being astronauts or something else that is male and white-dominated. And the great thing is — this is based on real women! Amazing!”
