In 1914, Henry Gaunt and Sydney Ellwood are far away from war. They’re too young to enlist, and anyway, one is battling his own war – the all-consuming infatuation for the other, not having a clue his best friend is in love with him, too. When Gaunt finally enlists, after caving in to pressure from his mother, Ellwood and their classmates follow. Although the two men find moments of comfort in each other, the trenches are a dangerous place to fall in love. Just as war can bring them together, it can also tear them apart.
