A CHILD’S EYE VIEW OF LIFE
Artist Nick Solonair uses his unique art work style, called Puzzlefaunism, to illustrate this glorious book. Put simply, the technique involves the free placement of animal symbols, in effect in an animated form, which is why the book “deserves to become a treasure of childhood literature”.
Nick often reflects on how children address the question, “Who do I want to be when I grow up?” The message in Little Tommy is that anyone can be whatever they want to be. All of us have the power to discover our talents, uncover our potential or follow our dreams in Sport, Music, the Arts or wherever our strengths happen to lie. The book also encourages readers to search for adventures in harmony with nature and to look after this beautiful planet called Earth.
So, what inspired Nick to write Little Tommy and the Kingdom of Clouds?
“When I was 6 years old my brother took me to the park to play football. My father then surprised us with a present of a new blue bicycle, which we rode with joy all day, and surprised us again by saying, “Boys, I have tickets for the football match in the stadium, would you like to come with me?” Excitedly we jumped with joy, Yes! Yes! Yes!
As we were not allowed to take our bicycle into the stadium, we left it next to a tree and, after the game, to our horror the bicycle was gone. That night I cried myself to sleep, dreaming about my new bike; so, to cheer us up, the next morning our father took us fishing by the river. Surprise! Surprise! A little boy on the riverbank was painting our bicycle red. When he saw us, he ran away so “Fliker” our new bike returned to us and became our friend again.”
