Maktub: An Inspirational Companion to the Alchemist

A collection of spiritual parables unlocking the mysteries of the human condition. Gathered from Paulo Coelho’s daily column, Maktub, meaning “it is written,” invites seekers on a journey of faith, self-reflection, and transformation. The author says, “Maktub is not a book of advice–but an exchange of experiences.” Each story offers an illuminated path to see life and the lives of our fellow people around the world in new ways, allowing us to tap into universal truths about our collective and individual humanity. These wise essays offer the perspective of talking snakes, old women climbing mountains, disciples querying their masters, Buddha in dialogue, mysterious hermits, and saints addressing the many mysteries of the universe.

WISDOM IN SHORT FORM

As a big fan of Paulo Coelho, and specifically of The Alchemist, I was beyond the moon happy that this book was coming out. So I got it without even thinking, and I wasn’t disappointed. This companion is full of 200+ short fables that carry their own individual wisdom. I even marked a few for revisiting later. As a firm believer of the Universe and the signs it gives us along our life journey, I have always loved the spiritual undertone of Coelho’s books. Well, forget undertones because this is a full-blown spiritual/religious text. You’ll see the word God in many stories, but I replace it with my own word inside my head and read on. So whether you’re religious or spiritual or neither, I do believe these nuggets of wisdom are worth reading anyway.

For fans of The Alchemist and of spiritual fables, this book is for you. If you get annoyed at religious speak, maybe skip this one. Enjoy!
