When some people break into Loth’s cell to save the lost prince of Aguillon, Loth is happy to play into their confusion. He’s red-headed like the prince, but he’s no royalty, he’s a pickpocket. The saviors don’t know that, though, so he plays pretend to get his freedom back. But then his cellmate Grub pretends to be the prince too, and now they’re all fleeing across the country, and Loth is forced to deal with Grub while pretending to be royalty and escaping monsters and bandits. Along the way, Loth discovers there’s more to Grub that meets the eye. He’s even kind of attractive. In fact, Loth suspects he might be developing feelings, but people keep trying to kill them, and this is all very inopportune. Well, at least they have a dragon.
