Running for My Life: One Lost Boy’s Journey from the Killing Fields of Sudan to the Olympic Games

At the age of six, Lopez Lomong was kidnapped and forced to serve as a child soldier in Sudan’s brutal civil war. In this powerful memoir, he describes how he escaped to a Kenyan refugee camp and from there made his way to the United States via the Unaccompanied Refugee Minor Programme. Suffering may have marked his life, but Lopez dreamed of becoming an athlete after watching Michael Johnson compete in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. The dream was eventually fulfilled in July 2008 when, as a Nike sponsored athlete, Lopez Lomong represented his adopted country in the Beijing Games.
