Set in an Irish town in 1985, Small Things Like These revolves around Bill Furlong, a coal and timber merchant. Bill leads a quiet, conventional life with his wife and five daughters and although the family isn’t rich, they comfortably get by on what they have and don’t rely on credit. But as he works his rounds, Bill feels the shadow of the past rising up to meet him along with the complicit silences of a people controlled by the Church. This critically acclaimed novel was shortlisted for a crop of literary awards, including the 2022 Booker Prize, and has been made into a film starring Oscar winning Irish actor Cillian Murphy.
