Owen Tanner has a chatty bird living inside his chest (called Gail), and he’s never met anyone else with the same problem. Medical forums label Owen a Terror and his mother’s response is to hide him from the world. But after a decade of living in isolation, Owen steps outside and his life completely changes. Suddenly, he’s forced to leave the only home he’s ever known to live with his uncle and cousin in Washington. Away from years of confinement, Owen finds family, friends, and even acceptance for the bird nesting inside his chest. He also falls in love and suffers heartbreak, as he lives his truth and escapes fear.

“What a truly remarkable magical realism novel! It has such lyrical language and surreal imagery running through the narrative, that it’s impossible to avoid comparisons with the stories of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This is a beautiful coming of age story that shows us how to be ourselves when the world refuses to accept us. A beautiful and special queer story for the ages. Highly recommended to people who like magical realism and queerness.”
