The Christmas Egg: A Seasonal Mystery

Chief Inspector Brett Nightingale and Sergeant Beddoes are called to a gloomy flat off London’s Islington High Street, where the body of an elderly woman lies dead on the bed. Princess Olga Karukhin, an emigrant of Civil War Russia, has lived in fear ever since fleeing her homeland at the time of the Revolution. The old woman had every right to be afraid as her killer also stole her prized trunk with its glittering treasure. Olga’s grandson, Ivan, appears to have run from the crime scene but is later seen returning to the flat as though oblivious to the terrible crime. Nightingale and Beddoes have their work cut out for them as they pit their wits against a plutocratic jeweller and Bolsheviks with unfinished business. Who murdered Princess Olga and will the killer be found before Christmas?

“Originally published in 1958, The Christmas Egg is a crime mystery of depth, energy, and colour. In her lifetime, Mary Kelly wasn’t ranked among the golden circle of leading British crime writers including Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers, and Margery Allingham. Hopefully, this novel will introduce her to a wider network of readers and carve her place in a genre whose popularity shows no sign of slowing down.”
