The Fascinators

Sam, James, and Delia are entering their senior year in high school. They’re magickers, meaning people who can do magic spells, and so they’re the only members of their high school magic club. While Sam prays for a simple year where he hopes to find out whether James loves him back, what they get is an awful year full of dangerous cults and situations that might end in the trio breaking up.

“Honestly, this book was okay.”

Honestly, this book was okay. It reads very young, which is okay, since it’s young adult. It’s a plot-focused book, so the characters are slightly underdeveloped. There’s a love triangle, which didn’t surprise me. I found myself skimming this book, to see what happens at the end. The cult thing was cool and the twist at the end was cool, too, but overall, I felt like the book was lacking something… depth maybe. Or maybe it’s the fact that I always prefer a character-focused book.

Of course, the other thing I liked was the queer angle. More and more young adult books – and books in any genre – have queer characters/relationships, and I am all for it.

If you’re dying for a young adult low fantasy focused on plot, maybe you’ll like this one.
