The Grownup is a short story written by Gillian Flynn, the author of Gone Girl.

I didn’t know this was only 39 pages, and as I read it, I flew through it. It’s well written, from the perspective by a snarky grifter, which is always fun to read. I liked that I couldn’t predict what was going to happen. We had a few twists that ended up in an open ending. I have to admit, I loved how ridiculous that open ending is, and I think that was the point to the whole thing.

I don’t mind open endings, but I felt like this story could have continued. If there was more, I would have given it much more than 3 stars. It’s a fun thriller, but I guess I am not used to reading short stories anymore. Maybe if it was a novella, it would have been more well-rounded.

If you like fast-paced short stories with plot twists, then you might like this story.
