Author John Marsden writes about the colonisation of Australia (the country of his birth) in an allegorical story with animal references. An unseen narrator describes the arrival of the ‘rabbits’ – English colonists – who on moving to the country drastically upend the lives of Australia’s native animals (Aborigines). Initially the encounters between the two are curious and to some extent friendly, although relations gradually break down as the ‘rabbits’ take over the territory. The Rabbits relies on stunning artwork and minimalist verse to provoke a bigger conversation around colonialism, its impact on those affected, the damage inflicted on the environment, and the grief left behind.
