Brent Toppen & Bobby Grich (Introduction)

Tragedy on The Mountain: A Quadriplegic’s Journey From Paralysis To Paralympics

At sixteen a sports accident left Brent Poppen a quadriplegic, but he refused to give up on his dream of sports glory! Poppen competed in two consecutive Paralympics, (Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008), in wheelchair rugby and tennis, where he earned a Bronze Medal in wheelchair rugby and Gold Medals and world titles in both sports. A septic infection kept him from competing in his third Paralympic games, although the seven months spent in hospital recovering from major surgery were given over to developing Tragedy on the Mountain and a second book, Playground Lessons. Reading and writing saved Poppen’s life, helping him to speak to audiences about fulfilling potential and overcoming adversity.
