Trevon Jenifer with Alan Goldenbach

Trevon Jenifer: From the Ground Up

Born without legs (a condition called congenital amputation), Trevon Jenifer grew up in an impoverished, crime infested neighbourhood just outside Washington D.C.  Life wasn’t easy, but that didn’t stop him pursuing the dreams of a person with two legs. For the first fifteen years of his life he successfully competed in wheelchair sports, but Trevon was hungry for more. After his family moved to a predominantly white neighbourhood, Trevon decided to try out for the school wrestling team with the backing of his stepfather. He had never wrestled before, but his natural talent shone through, and not only did he thrive on the mat but he seamlessly assimilated into a new community. Trevon Jenifer’s “anything is possible” attitude has led to even bigger success as a member of the US wheelchair basketball team, which took gold in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic games. From the Ground Up is Trevon’s story in his own words.
