Ya Sama! Moments from My Life

Hailed as one of the all-time great athletes in sports history, Tatyana McFadden is a wheelchair racing legend. Born in Russia with spina bifida, a congenital disorder that paralyses from the waist down, Tatyana’s early years were spent in a St. Petersburg orphanage. She wasn’t expected to live but her life changed when she was adopted by Deborah McFadden, a former US Commissioner of Disabilities, and taken to live in the United States. Ya Sama, a Russian expression that means “I can do it”, is the belief that has guided Tatyana’s life, and it hasn’t failed her. At fifteen she won silver and bronze at the 2004 Athens Paralympic games and crowned those achievements with gold, silver, and bronze medals at the Beijing, London, and Tokyo Paralympic games. Further successes followed in the World Championships and the New York City Marathon, where McFadden competed from 2012 to 2021. Written for middle-school readers, Ya Sama! Moments from My Life has a first-person narrative that will appeal to readers of all age groups.
