This second part of The Witch’s Kiss trilogy, by sisters Katherine and Elizabeth Corr, sees teenage heroine Meredith Cooper pining over the loss of her first love Jack while trying to learn the spells of her grandmother’s coven. Unfortunately, it’s hard to remember things when there are so many distractions around. Older brother Leo is having an emotional breakdown while Merry has the chance to take revenge on the person who caused it. Will she give in to temptation, and why has her grandmother suddenly disappeared? Who is holding her and is her abduction connected to a string of mysterious deaths?
This excellent book is a worthy follow up to its prequal The Witch’s Kiss. The story is gripping in all the right places while the narrative resonates with contemporary themes that will be familiar to most people. Leo cuts a poignant figure both as the older brother struggling with his sexuality and as the family member who feels like an outsider because he doesn’t have his sister’s magical powers. Merry is the “special” one on whom so much depends and she emerges from the story as a sure-footed teenager who refuses to be intimidated by the many challenges that lie ahead.
This dazzling book is a great read for teenagers and adults.
