As a mother of young children (three under five), I really didn’t get the point of Mother’s Day. Yes, a day for the children to show their appreciation – maybe husbands/partners too. But what would it be; chocolates, flowers, breakfast in bed, lunch out? I’m sure busy mums everywhere will be in agreement when I say that our “day off”, in reality, translates as “more to do tomorrow”.
Then, one year, my Mother’s Day gift was a book. Naturally, I was expected to read for a while without being disturbed. However, it soon became apparent to children and father that Mum was going to be off grid for quite some time. My first big read since pre-motherhood, what a joy! And so, the tradition was born – Mother’s Day chez nous became Mum’s Book Day, a rare opportunity to read uninterrupted for as long as I liked.
Of course, the trick was to have my book ready to hand, chosen in advance to make the most of the day. An important decision and anticipation most definitely a part of the pleasure. It had to be a book to absorb and entertain, transporting me from the sofa to the page. Over the years, I experimented with a variety of genres and styles. The only caveat of my special treat was a book that could be read from cover to cover within a day.
Even though my children are grown and I am no longer a busy Mum, the tradition of a “day off” endures. Me, my book, a coffee and a snack on hand. Maybe moving onto a glass of wine later in the day.
Browsing read2write.com, I am excited to see many new authors alongside some I know already. So many great books to choose from. If you, like me, are seeking this year’s Mother’s Day read, spend a little research time on the website and get your special day treat at the ready!
Here are a few that are tempting me…
Bangk (James Stack Book 1) by Mark Wesley
Wow, this guy is described as handsome, clever, funny, and sharp with a cool as a cucumber demeanour and a memory that never forgets. Definitely worth getting to know! Reviews depict a gripping, entertaining cracking page turner with lots of twists and turns in the plot – a great escape!
Seven Days In June by Tia Williams
This looks a great book for a day of me time – hard to tell from some of the reviews whether it is a love story with a happy ending, but an absorbing read about creative life in America, love and relationships.
A Body in the Village Hall: A Kate Palmer Mystery (Book 1) – Read2Write
Good old murder mystery set in the beautiful Cornwall – and I’m pleased to see that protagonist Kate continues in further books. I love to discover a new series and this seems to offer entertaining plots, developing characters and a delightful Mother’s Day read.
Case of the Bedevilled Poet: A Sherlock Holmes Enigma – Read2Write
This is quite short (112 pages) , so definitely a book for a day. With a combination of death threats, the history of World War 2 and the Blitz, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, this is certainly intriguing!
