TIME’S LENS

You don’t need to be a history buff to enjoy this latest offering from Amberley Publishing’s Through Time series. This affectionate look at Guildford from 1900 to the present, is a delightful photographic feast of the streets and landmarks that have made this county town extremely popular.

Along with the pictures are fascinating nuggets of information that will appeal to lovers of trivia. The Guildhall clock – the town’s most famous symbol – has stood over the high street since 1683, while the actual clock mechanism has been attributed to renowned horologist John Aylward. Time’s hand has barely touched the view of the upper High Street and the Royal Grammar School (apart from the traffic lights and road markings), although the same can’t be said of the Old Cottages on the west side of Park Street and Farnham Road, which were pulled down in the late 1950s to the disappointment of “many Guildfordians”.
