SHOWDOWN

In the final part of this excellent trilogy, teenage heroine Merry prepares herself for the biggest challenge of her young life: a tense and dangerous standoff that pitches her magic against charismatic but evil wizard Ronan. The stakes have never been higher. Ronan has kidnapped Merry’s older brother Leo, imprisoning him in a seemingly impenetrable underworld where time is driven by its own reality. Can she use her power to rescue Leo and destroy Ronan for good? As Merry races against the clock to track down her brother, trouble is gathering in her hometown of Tillingham, where the death of a teenage girl and supernatural goings on at a local lake are fuelling an atmosphere of mistrust and anxiety. No-one is immune to the rising swell of suspicion and even the coven of witches that Merry, her mother, and grandmother belong to, doesn’t trust her. However, Merry is nothing if not a fighter and as her powers increase so too does her confidence and she emerges from this enthralling adventure with her integrity, self-belief, and feistiness enhanced.

The Witch’s Blood engages the reader from the start thanks to its strong characters, solid writing, and moments of genuine suspense. The narrative also weaves in some familiar contemporary themes including teenage sex, homosexuality, betrayal, and fractured relationships. A less skilled writer might have struggled to build on the positives of The Witch’s Kiss & The Witch’s Tears, the first two books in the trilogy, but authors Katherine and Elizabeth Corr have gone above and beyond to produce a book that delivers its own unique punch.
